Bernard Buffet (1928–1999) was a French painter known for his stark, angular style and sombre, expressive imagery. Rising to fame in the late 1940s, he became one of post-war France’s most prominent figurative artists, celebrated for his instantly recognisable black-outlined figures and melancholic cityscapes, still lifes, and portraits. Hugely successful during the 1950s–60s, he produced many themed series and even inspired a museum dedicated solely to his work in Japan. Though critical tastes later shifted, Buffet remained prolific throughout his life. He died in 1999, leaving behind a vast, distinctive body of modern French art.
