1967 - “DISCOVER FRANCE BY TRAIN – FRANCE BY TRAIN - FRENCH NATIONAL RAILROADS - ATLANTIC COAST"
An original vintage travel poster for the SNCF French Railways promoting the ATLANTIC COAST of Western France. The original artwork is by G Larrieu. Overall size approx. 60cm x 40cm. This poster was first published in 1965 with French German text and then published with this English text in 1967.
Gaston Larrieu (1908–1983) was a French painter and illustrator known for his luminous, structured landscapes and his work for the French National Railways (SNCF). Originally from Eugénie-les-Bains, he trained briefly with painter René-Marie Castaing before developing his own style after World War II. His career took off in the early 1950s after successful Paris exhibitions, and his paintings—often depicting the Landes region, Brittany, Spain, and Italy—were acquired by major French institutions.
Larrieu also created this celebrated travel poster, the “Atlantic Coast / Côte de l’Atlantique” poster for SNCF in the mid-1960s, which won an international travel-poster prize in 1967. He illustrated several fine-press books and received honours such as the Ordre national du Mérite. Today, a museum in his hometown is dedicated to his work.
