1900 "Chemin de fer du Nord. Dover" 

A stunning, very rare and vibrant original vintage travel poster produced on behalf of "Compagnie des chemins de fer du Nord", the French railway company (founded into 1845 and integrated into the SNCF system in 1938. The poster’s French-language timetable claims — Paris to Dover in 5 hours, Lille to Dover in 3 hours, and Brussels via Calais to Dover in 6 hours. Its imagery is typical of Belle Époque resort and railway advertising: Dover is sold as a healthful seaside destination, not just a port. The text promotes “bracing air and sunshine,” “sea bathing,” “Turkish & medical baths,” boating, fishing, golf links, picturesque walks, drives, Connaught Park, Shakespeare Cliff, the seafront, Dover Castle, and the harbour. This fits Dover’s late-19th-century development: the town grew rapidly with railways, harbour expansion, cross-Channel traffic, and attempts to market itself as a seaside resort.
