1842 THE TRAVELLERS OR A TOUR THROUGH EUROPE William Spooner Game Map (FM200)

1842 - " THE TRAVELLERS; OR, A TOUR THROUGH EUROPE  "

An example of this rare 1st Edition Lithographic map, dissected and laid onto linen, as originally issued. William Spooner's graphically impressive map game board illustrating Europe. Covering all of Europe as well as the Mediterranean Sea, the regions of North Africa and the Near East as far as the Caspian Sea. A highly detailed decorative and graphic map with Cities, important buildings, ship wrecks and sea battles illustrated.

According to the Victoria and Albert Museum's catalogue: - 'Five players take the parts of The Travellers, who are from different nations, Austria, Sweden, Russia, Prussia and England. They must make their way to their respective capital cities each starting from a different city in Africa, or on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. This game is played with a teetotum or spinner with four sides marked N,S,E,W representing the directions they must move in'

This is a good collectable example of this rare map with the original hand colouring. There are no tears with the linen backing and each dissected section appears to be fully intact. Overall there is age toning & spotting, but the colour remains bright and unfaded. It also comes with the original slip case and publishers Label, which is incredibly hard to find with the original map. The label is heavily aged and the case is split at the top, but intact.

Overall size is 64cm x 50cm and the slip case is18cm x 16.5cm. Priced according to condition with better quality examples selling for £1,000-£1,500.
