A fine original antique lithograph printed map published for "The History and Antiquities of Highgate, Middlesex" by Frederick Prickett.
Overall size approximately 37cm x 32cm. Condition is excellent, with folds as issued.
A historic map of Highgate showing the area as it looked between the 10th and 17th centuries before the area was developed. Prominent landmark buildings are highlighted on the map, including the Spaniard's Inn at Hampstead Heath, Kenwood House, the Presbyterian Meeting House, and the poet Andrew Marvell's cottage (now destroyed). The paths of some old roads are also marked on the map.
The author, George Prickett, was a third-generation surveyor and auctioneer whose family had sold numerous tracts of land in and around Highgate going back to 1767. George's brother, Frederick, wrote a book about the history of Highgate, in which this map was featured. The Prickett firm, now operating as Prickett & Ellis, remains a prominent local estate agent to this day.
