LUIGI MAYER 1755 - 1803 An Italian artist, probably born in Rome but with germanic roots. He is mentioned in the records of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome in 1771, when he seems to have also been associated with G. B. Piranesi. Travelled to Sicily and Turkey with Sir Robert Ainslie sometime around 1780's, where he made several panoramic watercolours. He accompanied Sir Robert back to England in 1794. During his stay in Constantinople, Mayer married Clara Barthold (q.v.), an artist herself, who imitated the work of her husband very closely
