A fine original antique vue d'Optique showing a view of PLYMOUTH looking towards the Docks. That said, this is actually a direct copy of an original 1750 engraving by Thomas Bowles (after John Donowell) depicting Ironmongers' Hall in London. It was highly common for 18th-century perspective-view printmakers in Paris and Augsburg to pirate existing architectural plates, make minor decorative alterations (such as brightening the pillars with blue and pink watercolor stencils), and retitle them as exotic foreign or maritime locations to meet the high public demand for worldly travel scenes.

These engravings were specifically designed to be viewed through an optical viewing device or zoetrope with a convex lens to create a strong illusion of three-dimensional depth.

Condition is excellent. Overall size approx 44 x 30cm
