1773 - Large copper antique engraved map titled: " A MAP OF DORSETSHIRE from Actual Surveys and records of the County by J Bayly 1773"
A highly detailed map of the county with Roman numerals to the Hundreds and key bottom left. Inset map showing detail of Portland and the races off the Bill and the Shambles, with navigational detail indicating the safe approaches, beautifully engraved and quite rare.
Map is in excellent condition with bold image, attractive later hand colouring and with folds as issued.
Overall size is approximately 70cm x 52cm.
Born about 1730. Son of John Bayly, yeoman of Somerton in Somerset. Apprenticed (Goldsmiths 7/067) to Theophilus Spendelow (£20), 16 Oct 1745; after Spendelow's death Bayly served out the remainder of his time with Hannah Spendelow, the widow, and was made free (Goldsmiths) on the the testimony of the engravers Henry Yates and John Giblet 3 Dec 1755.
